Women and Newborns: Great Expectations

bulletThe hallmarks of nurse-midwifery care are continuity and teaching women to be self-relient, to trust their own bodies in delivering healthy babies naturally.

bulletDuring pregnancy the nurse-midwife monitors the health of you and your baby regularly and is prepared to teach and to answer questions about proper diets, personal hygiene, exercise, sleep, travel, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

bulletDuring labor, the CNM evaluates your pregnancy and is there to offer emotional and physical support. You can expect your nurse-midwife to make your delivery natural and uncomplicated and to assist in protecting you and your baby.

bulletFollow-up care begins immediately at birth as the nurse-midwife examines the newborn, provides advice on breastfeeding, infant care, and rejoices with you and your family in another healthy beginning.

bulletPrescriptions for medications and/or vitamins can be written by nurse-midwives in most states, should you require these good health care aids.

bulletYou will be advised about reproductive health, preconception, and personal care. Later, CNM's can provide regular gynecological care, such as annual pelvic and breast examinations and Pap smears.
