Certified Nurse-Midwives and You

Today's Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), a professional healthcare provider, is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has graduated from 1 of more than 30 advanced education programs accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). In addition, CNM's must pass a national certification examination and meet strict requirements set by state health agencies.

Most CNM's work in hospitals or birthing centers.

Some assist women in homebirths. They attend women during labor and delivery and are trained and experienced in prenatal, postpartum, and normal newborn care, and in routine gynecological care. Thus, as they carry on a centuries-old tradition of assisting women in the safe delivery of babies, they can draw not only on their professional skills but the use of advances and techniques in modern medicine.

CNM's continue the family oriented,

safe, personalized, and thorough health care that assures healthy women of having healthiest babies possible. And, although many work as primary care providers, they consult with physicians when there are problems that may put a pregnant women at risk.
